We’re obsessed with special days. There’s New Year’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, April Fool’s Day, Mother’s Day, Independence Day. Then there’s International Joke Day, Take the Stairs Day, Poet’s Day, and Pi Day. And let’s not forget American Touch Tag Day, National Bike to Work Day, World Pasta Day, and International Talk like a Pirate Day.
In fact, pick a day, any day, and more than likely, you’re going to have to decide WHICH special occasion you’re going to pay homage too. Here’s a couple of sources for the curious… http://www.holidayinsights.com/moreholidays/ and https://nationaldaycalendar.com/calendar-at-a-glance/
But what if I were to tell you, there is one very real, very definable day in your lifetime, that will alter not only the destiny of your life, but the history of this world! And yet, it’s a day we don’t celebrate, recognize, or even have a name for. For many, that day is today. Let me explain.
There are a couple of times each year where it’s likely a couple will first profess their undying love and devotion to one another, Christmas, New Year’s, and of course the most notable of all, Valentine’s Day. I don’t need to tell you, yesterday was Valentine’s Day. “In 18th-century England, it evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as “valentines”).” (https://studylinks.com/festivals-holidays-and-events-in-the-uk-a-guide-for-international-students/)
So, what does that make today? For those who made it official and are now engaged, it’s the first day the two of you make your appearance as one. The first day of what is hoped to be a long secession of events – Setting the date, saying your vows, setting up a home together… Starting a family, Sending the kids off to school. Seeing them grow, develop relationships, and making their own mark on the world. They may have their own children… and so it continues.
Will it be you… the kids you raise… or their children who finds the cure for cancer? How about the next great athlete? Artist? Mayor? Congressman? World Leader? We can be sure there are great things to come. We just don’t know the who or when. But when we do, there is no doubt it can be traced back to when a couple, just like you, made that same decision to journey through life together.
Today is the first full day of that journey! Let’s celebrate! Let’s immortalize the beginning. Preserve your love, devotion, and hopes for each other in photographs. Use your cell phone, use a camera, use a professional photographer. The method isn’t as important as actually doing it and preserving it. Print those images. Protect and safeguard those files. Record history and let future generations see for themselves where it all began.
With all that said, there is one very glaring omission in this discourse. Just what do we call today – the first day of this epic journey together??? I’d love to hear your ideas. Please reply to this blog and let’s give this remarkable day a name!
